TOP TIPS ON HANDLING DRY 'COVID HANDS'

Top tips on handling dry 'Covid Hands'

At Wimbledon Clinic Aesthetics, we have seen a real increase in customers getting in touch to enquire about hand treatments. Due to the necessary rise in hand gel with high alcoholic content, many people are suffering from 'Covid Hands'. The main symptoms are dry skin, inflamed skin and/or uncomfortable skin, with the high gel alcoholic content stripping away the natural moisture and protective oils of the skin - leaving it taut, dry and sometimes quite painful.

This situation may only become more difficult as the weather gets colder and the skin's natural mantle is further assaulted by a combination of challenging weather conditions, changing temperatures and regular applications of drying alcoholic hand gel. After all, Covid looks as though it will stay with us for some time - so the 'hands dry' feeling is likely to be with us for some time!

Avoiding Covid Hands

The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to help your hands to stay soft and comfortable even when you need to wash and sanitise them regularly.

Choose the right cleanser

One good tip is to forgo the soap and to choose a moisturising cleanser instead which will hydrate and soften the skin. This is particularly important if you suffer from dermatitis, eczema or any other skin conditions.

Find the right ingredients

Look for soothing products with antimicrobial emollient properties - this will kill off unwanted microorganisms without irritating your skin. Other beneficial ingredients include aloe vera, olive oil and shea butter.

Treat your skin

Invest in a regular regime or applying hand creams - without any fragrances - and moisturising hand masks. You can even make your own using kitchen ingredients such as olive oil, honey, Greek yoghurt and avocado. Put on a hand mask at night before bed and wear cotton gloves to protect your bedding whilst giving the skin-loving ingredients plenty of time to get to work.

Carry hand cream

Once you have used alcoholic hand gel, make sure you follow up with a thick layer of hand cream to minimise irritation and to soothe any dry skin areas. This will also keep them nourished. Skin creams tend to be more effective than lighter lotions.

Wear gloves

Now is the time to wear gloves regularly. Wear them when it gets cold out to avoid your skin becoming chapped. Also, wear them when you do household cleaning as many common products contain chemicals that can damage your skin and cause forms of contact dermatitis. However, if you have an existing skin condition, only wear rubber gloves for a short time, as they cause sweat to build up and to further irritate your skin.

Are your hands dry?

If you allow your hands to dry naturally, there is more of a risk that the skin will become dry and you will transmit viruses and other germs. Use paper towels in the best case to avoid any risks or an electric hand dryer - ensuring that your hands are completely dry before you walk away.
